The Spinach, Garlic, Onion, Thyme, Egg
It started with an egg. For my first project I wanted to keep things safe (and somewhat healthy). Spinach looked good. I googled a few things you could pair with spinach that could still compliment and egg and suddenly found myself over the stove browning garlic with minced onion and a dash of fresh thyme.
From here I sauteed the spinach until it appeared that half of what I started with were no longer there. The great thing about this project was how the colors of each ingredient brought out the other. Between the deep green I got from the spinach along with the golden sunny side up eggs, it made an unbeatable pair.
I chose sunny side up for a myriad of reasons. The first one being, it was hard to screw up. Which I (thankfully did not).
Step 1: Oil to the pan.
This was easy.
Step 2: Cracking the two eggs so that they displayed an even proportion over the skillet on the stove, while also making sure the yolk stayed in tact.
Step 3: On another skillet I heated oil and added in minced garlic and chopped up onion until both browned
Step 4: Once the garlic and onions had browned I added in the spinach as well as a dash of salt, pepper and time
Step 5: Once the eggs are white and the spinach is all the same texture, combine the two.
For the final curtain, I was at a loss. I looked forward to the egg, and the spinach, but I wasn't quit sure how to put them together. So I just put them together. The yolk was at its perfect consistency and the garlic and onion ad mist the egg were a flavor I was not used to, but certainly not opposed to.
What was missing: Cheese. I'll know better next time.
While this may not be a dish I make again, it was successful in achieving one thing: progression. I've often been told that the concept of art making is not about the final project, but how you get there. While it would be difficult for me to compare my egg experience to, say, Picaso, I still see how the development process of cooking comes into play with art. My eggs were getting crispy and my spinach was sizzling in the next pan over, it got me to thinking for my next project, what would I do differently, what would I do the same, how could this dish be improved. For one thing, while the spinach made for a delectable photograph, I would be prudent to side it with a sunny side egg again. Next time, what I should do, is mix the spinach in an omelet and dash it up with some feta cheese.
